President Michael D Higgins to have knee surgery next week

Higgins has previously said that he broke his kneecap while on a humanitarian mission in Colombia.

MICHAEL D HIGGINS will undergo knee surgery at a hospital in Galway next week, according to reports.

During the presidential campaign, Higgins revealed that he had broken his kneecap in a fall while on a humanitarian mission in Colombia.

After his election, he even joked about his “famous Colombian knee” when asked about the media’s coverage of his campaign.

Galway Bay FM reports that the operation will take place in the Bon Secours Hospital in Galway on Tuesday. The president then plans to return to the Áras and spend Christmas with his family.

According to RTÉ, Higgins will still fulfil his programme of engagements for tomorrow and Monday.
