INFORMATION ON IRELAND’S Covid-19 vaccine rollout often comes from Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, but there have been calls to instead put in place a Vaccine Minister.
Fine Gael MEP and former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said there should be a separate minister in charge of the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine.
She spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning and has spoken in recent days about the idea.
Labour leader Alan Kelly has previously called for a minister to be put solely in charge of the vaccine rollout, speaking about it in the Dáil and on the radio.
Responding to Kelly on this last month, the Taoiseach said a “good team” was in place with the High-Level Task Force on Covid-19 Vaccination.
The UK appointed a Vaccine Deployment Minister last year – MP Nadhim Zahawi.
So today we’re asking: Should Ireland have a Vaccine Minister?

Another reason not to shop at Tesco
Those zero hour contracts should be banned ! .
That’s okay Teddington. All public service contracts were “renegotiated” as well. Three pay cuts and changes to terms and conditions etc etc. Oh brave new world. .. !
Tedd, stop talking boll@x. Good lad.
I think you’ll find the private sector have no idea just how bad the lower rungs of the public sector are. We’ve taken pay cuts and are on increased working hours. I’m renting a tiny flat and driving a 15 yr old car. No summer hols last year. Actually no hols at all. So don’t think it’s all a bed of roses here.
One of the greediest companies ever to come out of the U.K. Never have and never will support them.
Very true Oleksanr.
Caroline. Have you ever worked in the private sector? I suspect not. In the public sector, you have a job for life. Unsackable. Job security in itself worth a lot- you will find that out when you apply for a bank loan. You also get a guaranteed pension, with a golden handshake thrown in. You have no idea how fortunate you are! Lastly, just to top all, you get annual pay rises irrespective of your abilities.
Tweed, you are an idiot. Do you not know that tesco have been losing millions the last 5 years. Will you be happy if they go bust and all the workers end up unemployed?
Buster, annual pay rise? You’re 100% wrong on that one.
Tell that to the public sector workers who have had three pay cuts in the last 7 years. All workers are getting screwed in this race to the bottom and phoney divisions such as the public and private sector worker BS just makes the illuminates job easier
Rather a paycut then a job cut John.
John,
As a result of the banking crisis, John, approx 220,000 irish people in the private sector had a 100% pay cut, ie they lost their jobs.
Not one person in the public sector lot their job involuntarily. Many of those lost their homes as a result.
The public sector workers just cannot comprehend the fear and consequences of losing your job.
Super , its not always the managers fault when it comes to the ordering . a lot of the time it’s supplier issues too .
No it’s not, pay 2 pension contributions for about a 6,000 a year pension in 20 years time. One is a survivors pension. I’m married but you have to pay it even if you have no dependants!!!
Not having a holiday is bad. Work all year without having a holiday what’s the point?
Unfortunately the public service are at the mercy of what’s popular for politicians to do when enough interest is given by the media usually following some misinformed statements such as yours
Buster, again, you’re 100% wrong. All public sector workers do not get increments every year. You can continue to repeat yourself but you’ll continue being wrong.
Buster. Just google “how tesco treats their suppliers” Then keep scrolling and reading. Take your pick of complaints. In addition to that they are disgrace the way they bully Irish farmers. And try being more mature in your comments. Good lad.
Why do we have to compare it? The media are constantly pitting the private and public sectors against each other. No one has the right to comment about a sector they do not work in. You do not know what it is like.
Omar, what part of the PS are you in, if you don’t mind me asking?
I think that in some parts of the PS you get these payments refunded or you do not pay some of the contributions.
How are you calculating your 6,000 pension in 20 years.
Gary, All PS workers don’t get them, because those that don’t are on their LSI’s in other words, they cannot receive anymore.
There were some tweaks around the edges, but as far as I know, those entitled to increments received them.
I don’t think that is the case Eleanor, as you can see here, one PS worker is annoyed at pay cuts and increased hours, when you have no job, or when you have been laid off and had to take a new job at 30 or 40% lower then your last one, then seeing others complaining about pay cuts, while having job security, paid sick leave, generous holidays and a guaranteed income (however reduced), then you have to point this out.
Private sector workers, small self employed business’s have been hammered.
Patyl, A huge number of public sector workers that are NOT at the top of their scales or anywhere near it, DON’T get increments every year. Jesus, how many more ways can I say it.
Does anyone actually still shop in Tesco?
Dear tweed cap.
Ok, lets have your solution then to turn around the losses that evil brit store tesco are making.
Iv’e got my ears on.
THEY ARE MAKING HUGE LOSSES, dont you get it?
Patly, Increments don’t go up every year. On the increment scale it rises every year for the first number of years. It then gets to the point midway on the scale where pay doesn’t move for maybe three to four years. It starts to rise again and then hits another pause for a few years. The site that you have included is for the people that aren’t going through the “midway” scale pauses.
Richard..tesco played the shareholders money and lost out bigtime.. they lost millions and millions. Now they put the burden on the staff that stuck with them for 20 years. Its a sad state that we are putting up with this.
In what part of the PS is that, genuine question Gary.I know people working in sections and their increments are yearly up to a certain point (LSI).
Don’t need another reason NOT to shop at Tesco. !!!
Only today they have been found to be screwing their UK suppliers AGAIN. No doubt it’s the same where ever they trade. Spose they’re still labelling things here as “Irish” which are far from it ?! Thought they might have improved their behaviour after the demise of ex CEO Leahy. Seems Lewis is no better ?!!!!!
@buster. Let the top brass take a pay cut first and stop the culture of paying bonuses to management who are running the company at a loss. Who the f*** do these guys think they are? They pay their staff peanuts. They pay their suppliers barely enough to keep producing their goods and they make fantastic profits off their customers. If they are running at a loss then someone is taking more than they should and it isn’t the staff.
I hate when Aldi and Lidl are referred to as “discounters”! They are a force to be reckoned with. Good riddance to Tesco. They have ruined town centres all over the country and in the UK.
Buster Iike I said Tescos are proven to be scurrilous operators. Their profits for Ireland were never transparent so you believe what you like. I couldn’t care less if they never turn it around. Plenty of competition in that sector to pick up the slack and offer alternative employment. I’m not looking to debate it with your good self. Have my own self employed boat to row
Gary
My own wife, worked in the public sector (school secretary).
Cushty job, she would be the 1st to admit. Every year, a pay rise :-)
Fantastic holidays, her pension contributions paid, defined benefits, and joy oh joy, a golden handshake when she retired recently (thanks bertie).
Am i still wrong?
Buster you need to get your facts right. Then you can write as much as you like
Tesco, Every LIDL helps.
Buster the public sector have been hammered. So shut up
That’s €9bn internationally. Tesco refuse to reveal profits in Ireland—because they’re so high. They even refer to Ireland as “treasure island”. Tesco messed up on international investments and dodgy accountancy practices. Irish workers should not be asked to pay for Tesco managements short comings. Maybe those responsible should face the axe/cuts first!
Well here we go Patlyndo. Another idiot with no idea.
What’s it called when the price displayed for an item on the shelf is at variance with the price that rings up at the checkout ie the price is higher at checkout?
http://www.irishexaminer.com/viewpoints/yourview/dont-forget-public-sector-workers-were-paid-increments-throughout-recession-332427.html
Tesco Ireland are a separate company, or so they say!! Tesco Ireland is still profitable as they admitted themselves the last time they and Mandate were in the LRC.
Tesco is it’s own downfall
For years they ripped people off with their prices compared to the UK
Bit of competition from the Germans and it hits them very hard and I for one am glad to see it
What a ridiculous statement, Mary.
Do you know what my wife earned then?
http://www.irishexaminer.com/viewpoints/yourview/dont-forget-public-sector-workers-were-paid-increments-throughout-recession-332427.html
Mary,
Hammered? Really.
“The unemployment rate rose from 4.2% in 2007 to reach 14.6% in February 2012.[32]”
How many people in the public sector got Hammered?
@ Right2Change Ireland
You know what. I agree with everything you say about Tesco. Unfortunate thing is I have seen members of your “party” shopping Tesco. Maybe send a memo…Or get some sort of real cohesion to this “movement” and stop spouting buzzwords, filling a gap and trying to get people to “Take the pledge”
Take the pledge? get funked FFS.
they are in trouble because of accountancy fraud and the tax payer and workers pay the price again
You have no idea what we pay.Do you pay the PRD.No you don’t pay that.between the PRD and the USC .They pay 5,000 Euro a year. You are so arrogant. Are you Fg minnion, or FF minnion.Sad person you are .
@james, the moral of this article (of many) don’t trust the company you work for as they don’t care about you. They will drop you as quick as you can mutter the word Why? IT, pharmas all will drop you and this government helps no indigenous companies with similar tax breaks. Scandal
Brendan it was only when independent newspapers launched a sustained campaign against tesco pointing out the price differences between tesco Ireland and tesco ni that they were shamed into reducing their prices in their republic outlets
We are constantly told that golden parachute payments and pensions are contractually binding when certain people are handed millions. But TESCO can waltz in and just tear up contractual obligations to lower paid staff.
So in Ireland of neo liberalism the power of a contract is only as string as the number of noughts attached!!!
Guess what NERA will do?
Omar, I work in the private sector. No pay increase since 2008, no holiday for four years. I can’t be the only one in this position. We might well ask ourselves “what’s the point”.
Nonsense super ted. Tesco are the cheapest ” brand name” supplier. Tesco price promise and all that.
Yes Clyde, for certain stuff I do. For meat and veg I pop to my butcher and market stall though. Better quality even if it is slightly more expensive
Rashers….yer’ in the same company for 8 years and yer’ complaining? Are you comfortably numb by any chance? I’m not being a smart arse by the way. I’m just genuinely asking have you tried escaping and climbing on up?
If labour were in Government it would never happen……oh wait
The managers and bosses have more to lose in the long run, the unions have to put a stop to this race to the bottom aimed at the shop floor, I’m sure the general public will back the workers and boycott Tesco, enough is enough .. Let’s now see the muscle these unions can muster to reverse the unjust intensions of this greedy business. .
Or it means other Supermarkets will grow and employ those same staff. It’s called Displacement and helps put unethical and greedy companies out of business and funnels jobs into better companies..
@teddington. What the hell has Tesco cutting wages got to do with the public sector? Do you think that just because Tesco workers are treated badly then public sector workers should be treated the same?
Really??? You sound like a typical teacher!!!!
And good riddance! A overvalued company run by incompetent idiots (A proven fact by the 137 sackings at senior management over the last 18 months!)
You’re dead right!
Again, the end of the fight club… With these CEO’s who make terrible decisions to normal folk just so they can maintain there lavish lifestyle, still in the buildings…..
A rip off, Paddy, there’s no other phrase to describe it. If you take the trouble to pull them up on it they will give you a refund. They rely on the fact that few people check their bill before leaving the store. Rampant overcharging at Tesco.
I’m 64 and a half years old, Clyde. Do you know of many job opportunities for my demographic? If you do I’d genuinely love to hear about them
You do realise that if public sector workers lose their jobs that the likes of you will have no cops to stop bold boys from taking your lunch money, no paramedics to put a plaster on your tongue cos you’ve talked so much shite about public sector workers that you’ve bitten your tongue, no firemen to rescue you when you still haven’t stopped talking shite and your tongue is so dry that it’s caught fire and set you a light and no one in the file office to pay your disability cos you can’t work anymore after you’ve been badly burned as a result of talking shite?
Let’s make this comment of the week Boganity !
Buster if the public service is such a bed of roses why then didn’t you sign up for the army and see the world?, or would you be crying like a girl after the first 2 weeks of training?.
Or become a nurse and clean some poor unfortunates backsides who have lost control of their bowel movements, or would that turn your stomach?, all for very poor pay and a pension that can barely sustain you in retirement, of which contributions are made through your take home pay, nothing stopping you from making pension contributions Buster?.
And just for good measure Buster before the economic crash of 2008 the private sector workers in Ireland were making hay, stratospheric take home pay in comparison to the public sector.
Give it a rest Buster this public vs private is bollixology both sides have suffered hardship, job security is one thing but when your wages have been decimated so much to be barely above the breadline your pontificating wears a little thin.
No no rashers we know it’s a ripoff but it’s also an offence if you can prove that there doing it deliberately there is an actual name for this kind of price fiddling and tesco lead the field in this kind money gouging of its customers because most shoppers don’t check the price differences that somethings occurs between shelf and checkout
This has nothing got to do with public and private sector.
What has this article got to do with the public sector? There’s always jobs going on publicjobs.ie and before you moan about those jobs already been taken by people already in the public sector your wrong as there’s a deprecate section for those people, obviously After all this time you still don’t know any better!
The staff on the ground are being asked to take the cut but any management that have been working for a similar length of time isn’t being asked… Obviously because they are better so… That’ll be a short meeting with tesco workers me thinks.
Job for life regardless of how big an idiot the employee is with a nice pension at the end……it’s sunshine and lollipops for some
Care to elaborate on the ‘golden handshake’ your wife supposedly received Buster? The vast majority of public servants do NOT get a golden handshake.
PS. I’m a former public servant who moved to the private sector – pay better, pension worse but much less sh*t to deal with in the job.
Public v private sector – yawn! ‘re increments let me put it simply. An increment every year until you reach the top point of of the scale, let’s say that’s five points, so an increase every year for five years. Then your long service increments (in my case there are two points after two and four years at the top of the scale) and then guess what? That’s it! No more pay rises for the length of your career in the public sector. No Christmas bonuses either.
They should cut the bonuses of staff higher up the chain perhaps ah no sure the little guy will take the fall yet again :(
Was it a private school she was in BusterVL. My neighbour is a school sec and she gets two weeks of in summer as the principal only can afford to take three. The principal has only time for three weeks as she has Rosters for classes maternity leave to plan for and jobs that can’t be done while school is in progress to over see. So really I would love to know where your wife had this job? And there’s another thing…….when school is in session there are no holidays for teachers. And no I am not a teacher. Did you look at the payslip in the article Quoted Buster????.? Did you see how much USC that person was paying out of the wage that they earned? No bluster away with herself. Mr know it all
The unions wexford? They only seem to exist for people paid salaries by the taxpayer…
The gratuity payment Avina. As far as I know all PS workers receive this payment, here’s a link regarding the HSE:
http://www.hse.ie/eng/staff/Benefits_Services/Pension_Management/Frequently_Asked_Questions/#What rate of retirement pension and lump sum is payable?
Generally it’s frowned up these days if you spend more than a year or two with any one employer. Hence they’d rather see the back of a ‘lifer’(in their view) of 20 years plus and replace with free Jobsbridge workers funded by the taxpayer…
Well said Eleanor
They’re all as bad as each other Boganity, we Irish give Tesco an extra hard time simply because they’re British.
Only one thing matters here, and it should completely undermine the arguments of those people defending this action.
Tesco’s CEO received pay of £4mln for six months work in 2014 (approximately €5.25mln).
**That is €200,000 PER WEEK.**
Guardian:
“Lewis, who was paid a total of £4.13m for his first six months in the job including a £3.23m “golden hello”, is in line to earn up to £7.8m this year, including £6.5m in cash and share bonuses if he hits performance targets.”
I would love to see Tesco go bust, most of the workers would be taken on by their replacement who are waiting in the wings. You might as well get screwed over by an Irish or German boss as a British one and imagine being a grower and getting more than 5c for a head of lettuce. I worked for company some years ago who were trying to sell scallions to Tesco on behalf of local farmers, there 18 pages on how the scallions should be packaged for their customers.
