Forget all the hyperbole, forget all the puffed up egos, forget about the candidates saying what they will and won’t do, it is all nonsense. They are running for President, a virtually powerless position.

The President plays a mainly ceremonial role in the running of the State. The Government must approve all Presidential communications, messages or addresses, both to the Oireachtas and to the public.
Many of the powers of the President can only be exercised on the advice of the Government. This means that if the President wishes to exercise a power, they must first obtain the advice and agreement of the Government.

If any of the candidates tell you otherwise then it is pure electioneering nonsense, complete waffle and they are talking out of the orifice nature designed for other purposes.
