Good for him. Now – let’s see how RTÉ handles the debates. The Presidency belongs to the people & it is the people to decided at the end of the day. Not RTÉ & their fellow overly left & liberal leaning media. The arrogance of MDH to automatically assume that he is entitled to a second term has made me determined to vote for anyone else up for the job. The compliance of the media to the belief that he should automatically get a second term without question is revealing. The overly left & liberal media. Stay tuned for the usual shenannagins that will subtlely point you in the direction of voting for MDH. Wanna bet?

@Declan Carroll: Yeah , “the lefty leaning media” controlled pretty much by FG(RTÉ) and that well known socialist Denis O Brien (pretty much the rest of it)..

@Declan Carroll: the presidency SHOULD belong to the people , but clearly doesn’t, not when elected representatives are telling their constituents to basically f*ck off with the Gemma O emails.

I don’t know if I would vote for Gemma, or Kevin, or anyone else, but as a citizen of this country I find it galling, not to be given the opportunity to listen, assess and form an opinion on anyone who wishes to put themselves forward.

At the moment, all we are doing is watching a game being played out, one that is choreographed to give the illusion of freedom of choice to the compliant electorate

@Chris Hennessy: We elect who we elect. We are a representative democracy. We vote for TD and Councillors to represent us. The current crop of Councillors were voted by us, the voters. They are acting on our behalf. If the County Councillor you voted for does not nominate who you want, then talk to them and tell them you are going to vote for some one else at the next local election. That’s democracy.

@CrabaRev: Im. Sorry if my post left you feeling that you needed to explain basic democratic processes to me, I must really have come across as silly. Or just maybe our democracy isn’t quite as pure as you would like to make out. We have had tribunal after tribunal which has shown the game to be rigged, inquiries which have deemed politicians to be corrupt, add the that the arbitrary redrawing of constituency borders to suit certain parties, then perhaps a conclusion could be drawn that the system in this country is more democratic for some than it is for others

@Declan Carroll: Agree with the arrogance of Higgins, would disagree with your view that R.T.E. and media in general are left wing . Our national broadcaster has been an outlet for preserving the right wing status quo since it’s foundation. As for the mainstream media, with few exceptions journalists sold their souls to the likes of Denis O’Brien.
