If abortion is not an issue on which conscience can be exercised then it is the party that is the problem.

    @TheoWolfe: They can exercise their conscience by leaving the party and then voting against it in the Dail. Let’s see the strength of their conviction…

    @The Risen:

    I know they can but it displays an intolerance of diverse views in a party that purports to be liberal and tolerant. But then again it it probably only mirrors the intolerance and authoritarianism of our time.

    @TheoWolfe: so if a party member announced they hated gay people and would oppose any bill that would benefit them you think SF should accept that based on tolerance?

    @TheoWolfe: Diverse views are why we have diverse parties (or people can always start a party of their own).

    @TheoWolfe: They are allowed to express their ‘diverse views’ at the debate stage, but are expected to respect the democratic decision of the membership. However, respecting democratic processes does not seem to be the no sides forte.

    @Barry Somers:

    I suppose they would be okay if they said they hated white middle aged heterosexuals, might even be applauded and feted as being woke.

    But don’t question the new orthodoxy.

    Thing is though, dislike or disapproval is not hate, I know the new authoritarians like to suggest it is, to control, intimidate and bully everyone into their world view.

    Diversity is fine, except diversity of opinion, that is frowned upon.

    @Brendan O’Brien:

    That is the authoritarian way of looking at things, All parties and organisations should be able to tolerate diversity of opinion.

    @The Risen:

    That is intolerance, on a moral question. No one for instance, should be whipped into voting for hanging no matter what the party view.

    @TheoWolfe: But within limits, obviously: otherwise they would be a random selection of people rather than a party.

    I believe I answered that silly assertion more than adequately. Now your trying to use the intimidation and bullying, I suppose though, that that shouldn’t surprise me.

    @The Risen: hardly a fair debate if the party big shots are preempting the outcome 2 days beforehand in front of the media.

    @Brendan O’Brien:

    Moral questions are something that parties have very often allowed a free vote to its elected representatives.

    The UK parliament,for instance, has allowed such vote on hunting, hanging, euthanasia (prevention), and embryology and fertilisation.

    Surely the deliberate mass killing of human life is as important an ethical and moral issue than any of those.

    @TheoWolfe: If you come across the deliberate mass killing of human life you should report it to the Gardaí because that’s highly illegal.
