A NATIONAL VOLUNTARY collection for survivors of mother and baby homes has been suggested by independent senator Rónán Mullen.
The government is drawing up a redress scheme for survivors on foot of the publication of the final report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation last week.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that religious organisations should “make a contribution” towards this scheme.
Speaking in the Seanad yesterday, Mullen said the country should consider “whether it would be appropriate to have some kind of national voluntary contribution as part of a redress package to reflect the social and community dimension to this story, along with Church and State contributions”.
“We are all connected with families who are in some way a part of this story,” he added.
We want to know: Should a ‘national voluntary collection’ be set up for survivors of mother and baby homes?

There is a lot to be said about drink culture in Ireland
No Garda around too busy busting people for marijuana
Do you think there are enough Gardai around to have one of every street corner in Dublin. It’s fairly obvious that crime doesn’t happen when Gardai are there. The lowlifes wait until the Gardai move on before starting their carryon. The Gardai have a fairly lax attitude towards marijuana possession than Police in most countries so you & your stoner friends should count yourselves lucky.
Maybe hold the “people” who did this responsible not the Gardai.
Why do you think I’m a stoner
You don’t even know me
What in gods green earth (no pun intended) would make you say something so silly and stupid?
The fact that you complained about Gardai busting people for marijuana was the first clue.
Just because I support the legalisation of marijuana dose not mean I smoke it still .
Chopstix, I’m not saying you’re paranoid or anything, but everyone’s definitely out to get you.
David
Good I got time to kill let’s have em
What about the four Gardai on bikes that ignored two men urinating on a homeless man in a doorway…then a Taxi driver went over and showed them and they shrugged and biked off into the night……
Goes to show the Garda pick and choose what they want to deal with if it’s not going to bump them up the ladder they don’t care
Chopstix is an out and out troll. Only makes comments against the grain.
@Chopstix
You really are one pathetic individual. Your silly, predictable, blinkered nonsense is enough to put readers off visiting this news site, permanently. You support legalising cannabis, you don’t like Gardai – we get it already. Your comments give horse manure a bad name.
Mike
I never said I don’t like gardai that your opinion
Shanners
Because I have a different opinion in your eyes I’m a troll well then since you have a different opinion in my eyes I guess that makes you a troll
Chopstix, you are a fool, your blaming the Gards on it, did it not occur to ye that the person to blame is the person who committed the offence??
James
I never blamed the Garda on it I simply stated that they should spend less time tackling marijuana do it free them up to tackle serious crime
The Journal needs a “report for being a bellend” button
All I’m asking for is that marijuana be legalised so it frees up Garda resources to tackle serious crime among other benefits
What’s everyone problem with that ?
If the honest decent pot smokers would just stop then the guards would have more time to deal with drink problems
Ya chopstix a woman said it on the journal so it must be true
If the government stopped letting themselves be led by lobby groups for the big pharma company’s it would be legalised. Drink is just a socially accepted addictive legal high
@tfm i agree with u except lax attitude to marijuana. in waterford i presume u r from waterford small possesion can mean u named on munster, news and star garda visiting your workplace to let your employer know i dont call this lax.peados rapists protected yet garda and these rags let the most people possible know u have used marijuana thats not lax its life destroying and pure propoganda to let naive people know we r winning the war on drugs.u know in waterford a murderer continued with his bus driving job while i was sacked for being caught with a vaporiser that had traces of smoke 3g which i bought on e bay lax my whole.
Of course chopstix is a troll. Thats why it has opened a twitter account just to comnent here anonamously. No tweets or info on the account.
Chopsticks, the sale/importation of cannabis is a serious crime, why shouldn’t the Gardai tackle it?
Ah lads lay off poor Chopstix, his opinion may not be the right one but hes entitled to it none the less…
I’m only home two days… said the wrong thing in temple bar tonight having the craic. Ended up with stitches on my arm from some random nutcase. Thank god for one young fella who blocked the pint glass flung at my face. Madness!
