JOE BIDEN WILL be officially sworn-in as the 46th president of the United States today.
This year’s inauguration will be like no other, taking place amidst a global pandemic and two weeks after riots at the Capitol.
The official transition of power will take place at noon local time (5pm Irish time), but Donald Trump has already said he won’t be there to pass the baton to his successor – becoming the first outgoing president not to do so since Andrew Johnson in 1869.
Trump may not be watching, but many others will be.
We want to know: Will you watch Joe Biden’s inauguration as US President?

you think it’s based on talent at the moment?
I thought Will Smith gave his best acting performance ever in Concussion but with the film shining a bad light on America’s favorite sport and the NFL in general, that could be the reason it’s kept out of the spotlight.
Oscar nomination voters are overwhelmingly white and old, born in an era when racism was still legal in America; 94% white, 74% male and an average age of 63 years old; this is not representative of the public who watch movies. To suggest they’re impervious to the racism that was pervasive during their generation is remarkably naive.
Older people had more exposure to systems of oppression which were bound to have an impact on their worldview, similar to homophobia and sexism. No, it doesn’t mean they’re automatically racist but it does raise questions about whether the voters are representative of the larger American movie viewing public. Clearly, they aren’t and that’s the issue.
Take for instance Selma, which was a masterpiece but wasn’t nominated. For many white people a movie like that understandably won’t have the same effect on a black person because they didn’t experience the racism on display in that movie. Therefore when it comes to voting, they’re less inclined to nominate it, not because they’re racist but because our experiences do have an impact on how we perceive things. If the academy was more diverse and representative of the overall population we likely wouldn’t encounter this problem.

Well I certainly don’t think they are basing it on skin colour.
Blacks have made huge strides in the US media last few decades most notable by the fact they dominate the popular music industry. They do have some way to go in cinema and TV but celebrity protestors need to be careful because that last thing anyone wants to see is black people getting nominations and awards being viewed as tokenism.
Monty – being representative of the audience should not be the goal. In that case 10% of all awards should go to left handed people. All that matters is the top talent and performances in a given year gets to the top, and there’s no evidence that talent is being held back or down. Merit is all that matters.
Your way of thinking is exactly the sort of poisonous leftist/marxist thinking that leads to gender quotas.
Well Cal that the problem, merit is subjective and there is an argument to say there should be more blacks getting awards. There doesn’t seem to be too much transparency with how awards are given out
Cal: We need more marxism, not less!
But anyway, you’ve completely misrepresented my position and made a complete fool of yourself. I never said the awards have to be exactly correspondent to the demographics of the US. I said the people who vote should be representative of the people who actually watch the movies. How is this controversial?
Donna the academy awards a purchased by the studios. Members of the academy are courted months in advance. Brought to parties, luncheons etc. Talent has very little to do with it.
Self appreciation society. A bunch of overpaid actors all get together to pat each other on the back. Who cares.
“in era when racism was still legal”
It’s illegal to be racist? Bad news for Spike Lee
I’m not saying it’s racist but there are all sorts of reasons people are nominated apart from talent: studio pull for one thing. there’s not even a requirement placed on the judges to see all the movies they vote on, so many are voting blind and there are several of reasons why they vote the way they do. lobbying goes on a lot, too.
12 years a slave, everybody.
What about 12 years a slave?
Didn’t Robert Downy Jr win an Oscar in tropic thunder, best black actor I’ve ever seen.
I watched Will Smith’s performance in Concussion and, while I enjoyed the movie, I couldn’t help but remark how the mighty had fallen. It was enjoyable but not anywhere near worthy of an oscar nomination, and it’s worth bearing in mind those white actors who have never won an oscar like Di Caprio. Personally I don’t care what colour an actor or actress is, as long as they give a convincing performance, it does annoy me when roles are given to black actors to satisy a PC agenda.
I remember reading Jeffery Deaver’s books and looking forward to the movie of The Bone Collector but it was ruined when the principle character was played by Denzel Washington, in the books he was a very much white man. I don’t care that I’m watching a black actor, and a very good one, but it’d be like watching a movie of James Patterson’s character, Alex Cross, being played by a white actor. Instead the actor was Morgan Freeman and the movie directed by Spike Lee and was called Along came a Spider. A little context would go a long way with all of this.
‘Let’s just give the awards based on skin colour and not talent !!!!’
Thats exactly what they are doing. I think you are missing the point.
Racist or not, I sincerely doubt the academy actually watch all the submissions, or even the nominees, particularly in the foreign language and animated categories.
Have 2 versions – A Black n White one.
James. They do have a black awards ceremony. The black entertainment television (bet) awards ceremony. We don’t have a white awards ceremony because that would be racist. Reverse racism is rife
Thanks Derek I’m going to watch Concussion
How many oscars did 12 years a slave get?
Things are gettin outta hand. Now we have a film – 50 Shades of Black – Even tho its a take on 50SOG.
oh Stephan- that got a guilty chuckle
