The gangs exist, in the main, to supply a drug demand created by recreational drug users. Violence and drugs go hand in hand so if you use drugs (hash, weed, cocaine etc.) you are providing the reason (money) why criminal gangs fight for control of the drugs market. Innocent victims including gardai get caught in the middle. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY

@Think Before You Buy: That’s a point that’s lost on a lot of people, yet so true.

@Think Before You Buy: That’s true but do you really think that’s ever going to change? People will always buy drugs. Be it from a street dealer selling dangerous, untested and unregulated drugs or from a legal, taxed and regulated source such as a coffee shop in countries that have legalised them. Asking people to think before they buy is never going to work. People don’t give a shite unfortunately.

@Think Before You Buy: the drugs and the use of the drugs existed long before the imposition of unjust and largely practically unenforceable prohibitionist laws. The existence of these gangs’ main revenue stream is a DIRECT consequence of prohibition; the law creates value in an otherwise valueless product, competition for earnings ultimately creates violence.

People seeking states of altered conscience or recreational sensory pleasure DO NOT cause violence.

THINK BEFORE YOU PROMOTE UNJUST PROHIBITIONIST LAWS.

@Jim Demps: you’ve missed the point; I was referring to gang violence, as was the original comment. It is not people’s desire to use drugs that fuels gangland violence but the law which prohibits drug use, conferring value onto drugs, creating a competative illicit trade.
