The Yarra River at Federation Square is cold, dark and tidal. As a Melburnian, I wouldn’t jump into it in the middle of the day, let alone at night, to save some one because then the authorities would have to be rescuing two people. (Would you jump into the Liffey at the O’Connell Bridge in the middle of the night?) I can only guess that the waiter was a strong swimmer who knew what he was doing.

There has to be a better way to get the message through to some young men that doing some things, jumping in the Yarra at night for example, are extremely foolish with a extremely high potential of being fatal.

How is the survivor going to feel for the rest of his life?
