IT’S BEEN A mixed week in property news.

On the one hand, there has been ongoing controversy relating to Permanent TSB mortgages with the bank starting to offer compensation to customers for overcharging.

On the other, there has been some good news for the housing market as a whole with residential sales around the country showing an increase of one third on the numbers for last year.

Here is all the week’s property news.

The Big Movers

Permanent TSB

A Permanent TSB mortgage customer has said that he has been offered €2,700 in compensation after being overcharged by €21,000.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime, the man who was identified simply as David, said that his family would have been overcharged by almost €120,000 over the course of the mortgage if the issue had not been spotted.

The monthly amount they were over-paying worked out at around €320. David stated on the programme that he wished to dispute the lump sum offered to him but was unsure how to do so.

We’re buying more houses

New figures have shown that property transactions for the first half of 2015 are up a third on the same period in 2014, according to the Irish Times.

This comes from an analysis it carried out of the Property Price Register that has shown that there were 21,425 sales between 1 January and 30 June this year – a figure 34.6% higher than the 15,920 transactions that took place during the same period in 2014.

And Finally…

This week The Guardian has taken a look at plans that are in place to re-floor the Colosseum, one of Italy’s most renowned landmarks. Critics of the plan argue that doing so will be “history betrayed” and is a move to please tourists.
