BAI upholds four complaints against TV3's 'Psychics Live'

One of the complaints was made against a presenter’s comments who stated as fact that a woman’s home would burn down but it would be OK, because insurance would cover it.

FOUR OUT OF five complaints upheld by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland were made against the TV3 show, ‘Psychics Reading Live’.

The authority, which have published the complaints online, said that four shows broadcast during the summer months were in breach of their broadcasting code.

One of the complaints was made against a presenter’s comments on June 23, 2012. Live on air, the psychic advised a woman that she would be married in Asia in three years. He also told her that in 18 months or so her flat would burn down but said that it was OK, because insurance would cover  it.

In this case, the committee found that the show failed to meet certain broadcasting requirements particularly conveying “the message that the service was more than an entertainment service, purporting to foretell future events as a matter of fact”.

On the show broadcast on August 11, 2012 a caller asked if she would ever conceive. The complaint was made against the host who tells her that she will not only conceive, but will conceive twins.

TV3 responded that this was a family and relationship issue, however the committee found against them saying it was a health matter and the show did not comply with the restriction on discussions concerning health matters.

Other complaints were made against shows broadcast on July 30  and August 27, 2012.

In a statement TV3 said:

TV3 has addressed the issues raised by the BAI Compliance Committee Decisions. TV3 notes that the BAI acknowledges that these services are lawful.

In the past, the BAI also upheld complaints made against the ‘Psychics Live’ show for readings made about caller’s health.

The other complaint upheld by the BAI was made against The Sunday Spirit show on Ocean FM on July 8, 2012. The committee found the show was not “fair, objective and impartial” when the presenter Dermot Leydon conducted an interview with a member of Youth Defence on her beliefs on the issue of abortion.
