A MAN ON the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has been sentenced to seven years in prison after biting off the head of his girlfriend’s dog.

Luis Arroyo pleaded guilty to mistreatment of an animal and domestic abuse in the incident, which occurred on 4 February.

The 40-year-old is said to have attacked the two-month-old chihuahua, and punched his 38-year-old girlfriend, in the western mountain town of Lares.

Judge Carlos Lopez Jimenez also fined Arroyo €3,000 (€2,780).

The El Vocero newspaper reported that Arroyo, who was unemployed, had been living with his girlfriend for six months.
