BBC journalist leaves phone at home, tells the world Queen Elizabeth is in hospital

Buckingham Palace says she’s fine. The Queen, not the journalist.

IF YOU HAVE a social media account, the thought of someone posting something to it is probably an annoyance.

Spare a thought, then, for BBC journalist Ahmen Khawaja. Earlier this morning, she sent out a tweet that claimed the Queen of the UK had been hospitalised.

The tweet was then picked up by such storied media outlets as CNN and Bild.

However, despite the august nature of those who picked up on Khawaja’s tweet, the story wasn’t true. In fact, the person who sent the tweet probably knew that, because the journalist says her phone wasn’t in her hands when the tweet was sent.

A spokesperson for the BBC says that what actually happened was a practice run for when the queen does die.

Buckingham Palace says it doesn’t know where the story came from and both Bild and CNN have corrected themselves.
