FIGURES RELEASED TODAY show that over 50 per cent of those released from prison in 2008 committed another crime within three years of being out.

That number was higher again in 2007; with over 55 per cent of people re-offending within a three year time scale.

The CSO carried out the report among offenders released from custody in 2008.

Re-offending was higher among men then women:

  • 51.5 per cent for men
  • 46.2 per cent for women

The figures also showed that there was a decrease of re-offending with age.

Some 56.8 per cent of re-offenders were under 21, while just 23.1 per cent were 61 or over.
