Dundrum apartments evacuated over fire safety concerns

The residents of the Laurels apartments are to be evacuated after it emerged that some parts of the building are not in compliance with fire regulations.

RESIDENTS FROM THE Laurels Apartments in Dundrum are to be moved from their homes after it emerged that some parts of the building are not in compliance with fire regulations.

The apartments, which are located on Ballinteer Road, are under the control of the receiver to Tuskar Asset Management, Kieran Wallace of KPMG, and the non-compliance was discovered during scheduled works around 10 days ago.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the Fire Officer were immediately advised of the non compliance and steps were taken to ensure the safety of wardens.

The tenants in the apartments were then advised of the issue and the plans to ensure that the development is fully compliant, and were told that work will commence shortly to fully rectify the situation.

Relocated

Tenants will be temporarily relocated while the work takes place, and they have been told that they will not pay rent or utility bills during the period of remedial work.

They will also be assisted with the removal and return of their belongings.

The work will take place over the coming three months and the receiver has said it is committed “to remediate the building so that it will adhere to the highest fire safety standards”.

Bennett Property Ltd, the managing agent, will continue to liaise closely with tenants and with the authorities “to ensure that the safety of tenants continues to be prioritised”, said a statement.

The managing agent will communicate on a regular basis with tenants over the coming months.  Wallace, the receiver, has no  connection to other Tusker Asset Management buildings.

None of the people to be evacuated own the apartments – they are all renting their homes.  Three full-time fire safety wardens were put in place while the investigations into the situation were underway.
