TV PRESENTER RICHARD Bacon has awoken from a medically induced coma that he says left him close to death.

42-year-old Bacon recently took ill on a flight from the US to the UKon 5 July.

The former Blue Peter presenter left the plane in a wheelchair with an undiagnosed double chest infection, something that was initially diagnosed as pneumonia.

Upon arrival at hospital in Lewisham in south London, doctors placed him in a medically induced coma, something he would remain in for six days.

Bacon has emerged a happy man – tweeting ‘I am alive’ to comedian David Baddiel – and a definite fan of the British National Health Service.

“I didn’t die because I’m on the NHS,” he tweeted earlier today.

This is how good Lewisham Hospital is. I walked in off the street simply complaining of being short of breath. With (sic) 90 minutes they had placed me into a life-saving six-day coma.

British native Bacon has lived in the US in recent years where he most recently hosted a daily news magazine called The 30 on the Fox network.
