Man dies after getting into difficulty swimming in River Shannon

Emergency services were alerted just after 5pm yesterday.

A MAN IN his 40s has died after getting into difficulty yesterday while swimming in the River Shannon in Limerick.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 5pm, and gardaí and fire services attended the spot at Parteen Railway Bridge in Thomondgate in the city.

Units from Limerick Marine Search and Rescue arrived at the scene to find the man semi-submerged, and brought him aboard a lifeboat.

CPR was administered to the man when was removed from the water, and members of the HSE ambulance service removed him to University Hospital Limerick.

He was later pronounced dead.

A file will now be prepared for the coroner.
