Dublin man shot outside his home after killers kicked down his front door

GARDAÍ HAVE SAID the man killed in west Dublin last night was shot outside his home after a confrontation with a number of people who came to his door.

The victim has been named as 36-year-old father Darragh Nugent.

In a briefing with media this morning, gardaí said at least one perpetrator kicked in the door of his home on Wheatfields Avenue at about 9.40pm.

The confrontation continued onto the street and Nugent was shot a number of times. A large saloon car then sped off towards Collinstown Road.

There were children in the house at the time, according to Superintendent Dermot Mann.

Although sources believe Nugent was killed as part of a local feud, gardaí today said they are unaware of any threats on his life, nor are they aware of a possible motive.

The shooting is not linked to the Hutch-Kinahan feud.

Investigating officers believe there were two or three perpetrators in the area from around 9pm last night.

They have appealed for anyone who may have seen something to contact them. They are also working off a theory that the getaway car was an older, dark BMW saloon.

Francis Timmons, a local councillor, called last night’s shooting a “horrendous murder”.

Nugent, he said, “was somebody’s son, a father and a friend”.

“My thoughts are with his friends and family. Another shooting in North Clondalkin, another life lost, another family devastated.”

A large crowd gathered at the scene last night as emergency services responded. A member of the armed response unit was also present.

The area remains sealed off as forensic tests take place.
