Safe deposit box rental up as aggravated burglary numbers soar

One client at a safe deposit box facility said a burglar put the kettle on and told them they had until it boiled to tell them where their safe was.

A PRIVATE SAFE deposit box facility in Dublin has said there has been a noticeable increase in people renting boxes because of aggravated burglaries.

The latest crime statistics released yesterday showed aggravated burglary rose by 19.5% in the last year and Seamus Fahy, Director of Merrion Vaults told TheJournal.ie that this coincides with what his company has been seeing recently.

“We have people coming in who have either been subject to an aggravated burglary the day before or their neighbours have been, some are coming in because of someone they know who it happened to,” he explained.

He said a lot of his clients would have safes in their own homes, either because they run small businesses and have cash on hand or because they own expensive jewellery.

A client told me last week that thieves put the kettle onto boil and said “tell us where the safe is before it boils” and obviously you do.

“In the last six months certainly we’ve seen a jump in people telling us aggravated burglaries are why they want a safe deposit box,” he said.

Some 1,200 of the vault’s boxes have already been rented and the company has only been open for one year.
