MORE THAN HALF of respondents to a new survey being rolled out by RTÉ claim to have had sex with a stranger.

To break down those figures a little:

  • 45% gave a straight up ‘yes’
  • 11% said they had but wouldn’t do it again
  • 13% said ‘no’ but they’d like to
  • 31% said they hadn’t and that they weren’t interested

The results are some of the early findings from the ‘Generation What?’ project, which is being delivered by RTÉ in partnership with broadcasters in 11 other EU countries.

The survey is aimed at 18- to 34-year-olds. Other questions will cover areas like family, society and the future, and you can find more details about the survey here.

Results from France showed that just over a third of respondents claimed to have had sex with a stranger. Interestingly, the number of people who said ‘yes, but I wouldn’t do it again’ was almost as high as the number who gave a straightforward affirmative.

A third of respondents in Ireland said they masturbated ‘occasionally’ with 7% ticking the ‘no, it’s not for me’ option and 59% saying they did it regularly.

In Belgium (we’ve no idea why they’re comparing us to Belgium in this category… this is the info RTÉ sent us) 88% of people said they masturbated ‘all the time’ (!) while 6% responded ‘occasionally’.

Independent sociologists will analyse the data once it’s all in, supported by the Department of Sociology at UCD.  RTÉ says it will be used to “help build a coherent and reliable ensemble of material” that will form the basis of two television documentaries to be broadcast in late-2016.

The purpose is to see what makes young people in Ireland tick and how they relate with the rest of the EU, in order for RTÉ to deliver a “detailed and revelatory perspective on how young Irish people live their lives today”.
