SIPTU bosses vote to support future industrial action at Dublin airport

THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL of Siptu has voted to ‘reiterate total and complete support’ for union members at Aer Lingus and the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

They criticised Aer Lingus, Ryanair, and the DAA for taking legal action to prevent strike action.

In a statement this evening, the union said it challenges “the very democratic right of workers to withdraw their labour in a legitimate trade dispute over pay and conditions of employment”.

[This] is universally recognised in international law and in treaties and conventions to which this country is a signatory.

The union voted today to support “any, and all, industrial action necessary”, and to fight any further legal action that arises.

The High Court granted an injunction to the Dublin Airport Authority to halt the planned closure of Ireland’s airports two weeks ago.

Unions at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports planned to go strike for four hours at the beginning of the St Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend in a row over a €700 million gaping hole in the workers’ pension fund.

“Even management has conceded that as things stand at present 90 cents in every euro of their contributions are completely worthless to them,” Siptu said.
