Two found alive and body of man recovered in Cork search

The yacht went missing yesterday between Baltimore and Schull.

Updated 7.15am

A RESCUE OPERATION for a yacht off the West Cork coast has been stepped down as the body of the third person who was missing has been recovered. An elderly man and woman who were also on the vessel were found alive early this morning.

The alarm was raised by a friend when they failed to return to shore to meet them at 7pm yesterday.

Two of the people on the yacht – a man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s, both from the UK – were located on a small island in Long Island Bay at 6.15am by a Coast Guard helicopter.

The two people had managed to swim ashore after their vessel capsized. They had no serious injuries but are suffering from minor hypothermia.  The upturned boat was found aground on the nearby Carthy Islands.

The search continued for the man who was still missing and his body was recovered at 8.15am.
