THE IRISH NAVAL SERVICE has detained a Spanish fishing boat over an alleged breach of fishing regulations.

The Spanish-registered vessel was detained shortly after 1:30am this morning, around 160 nautical miles east of Loop Head in Co Clare.

The boat is being escorted to Castletownbere by a naval boat, the LE Niamh, and is expected to make land at around 10.30pm this evening after which it will be handed over to Gardaí.

The detention of the boat is the 11th detention of a vessel carried out by the Naval Service so far this year.
