Ireland's first ever shopping centre is getting a make-over

The planned improvements to the shopping centre.

STILLORGAN SHOPPING CENTRE in Dublin is getting a face-lift.

The shopping centre was the first shopping centre built in Ireland in 1966 and houses over 50 retailers including Tesco and Dunnes Stores.

A planning application has been lodged for a significant refurbishment and upgrade of Stillorgan Village by Kennedy Wilson Europe Real Estate plc.

The plans include replacing the existing street-level canopy system with a glazed canopy.

The developers said the existing system is dated and does not fully protect shoppers from the elements.

The refurbishment would also entail an upgrade to the building façade to improve the visual appearance of the centre. Plans for improvements to the car park have also been submitted.

Peter Collins, Chief Operating Officer of Kennedy Wilson Europe and Head of its Irish business said:

“Stillorgan Village is Ireland’s first shopping centre and will be 50 years old in 2016. The centre has an extremely loyal retailer and shopper base, as evidenced by its #1 ranking in the recently published Retail Excellence Ireland Shopping Centre survey, yet it has had no major upgrades in its history.”

The group said the planned improvements will deliver a better customer service for shoppers and will ensure”that the unique Stillorgan Village atmosphere is retained”. 

The refurbishment will not result in disruption to operations at the centre during its implementation.
