AT LEAST FOUR people have been injured following an explosion at a grain silo in Strasbourg, eastern France.

The explosion took place at 9.30am today and police confirmed that four people were injured in the blast. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

Initial media reports suggested that there were 11 casualties however the police refuted that claim on Twitter. The lower-Rhine prefecture also took to social media to urge  people to avoid the area.

“Eleven people were at the scene at the time of the incident, four injured (not eleven),” the police said.

A large fire broke out in the aftermath of the explosion and dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene, according  to French newspaper La Depeche du Midi. Photos on social media show thick columns of smoke rising up form the silo.

The grain storage facility is owned by the Comptoir Agricole group, a major agricultural cooperative that operates throughout the region.
