Take 5: Wednesday

5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock.

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, brings you five stories you really should read before you head for the door at 5pm…

1. #STATE ASSETS: The McCarthy Report on the disposal of State assets has today recommended that Bord na Móna, the National Stud and the State stake in Aer Lingus be sold off, the ESB be restructured and Dublin Bus privatised – but not all at once. All eyes were on another cash black hole this afternoon as the Anglo Irish Bank sign was removed, letter-by-letter, from its Dublin HQ. See our pic slideshow here.

2. #CANNABIS: The Garda Commissioner has expressed his concern over the increase of cannabis factories – 60 ‘grow houses’ have been discovered in ten months. Meanwhile, Justice Minister Alan Shatter has been promising gardai that he will introduce legislation to give them access to a national DNA database.

3. #GULF OIL SPILL: The relatives of the 11 men killed in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig tragedy commemorated the first anniversary of the disaster today. Before and after pictures show how the subsequent massive oil spill continues to impact the coastal area.

4. #iPHONE 5: Do you have an iPhone 4? By September, you’ll be out of the loop: that is when Apple is reported to be releasing the iPhone 5.

5. #FALSE ALARM: A man triggered a massive security alert at a shopping centre in the US when he was thought to be armed with… an umbrella.

(NOTE: Today’s Take 5 image comes from the hardworking folks of Finglas Fire Station – see The logo was designed by firefighter/paramedic Seán Peters, who says that the inspiration comes from the number of their station – #5 – and a twist on the SuperMan ‘S’. Awesome.)
