1 #SAVITA Details of the investigation into Savita Halappanavar’s death were announced today.  The HSE said that a seven-member investigating team will be chaired by Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at St George’s University in London.The death of the 31-year-old woman University Hospital Galway last month has been subject to massive national and international attention over the past seven days.

2#NIB Danske Bank has shut National Irish Bank’s branch network in order to cut costs and redirect focus. All visible signs of the banks disappear from today.

3#BREASTFEEDING Health problems faced by children and adults may be partly due to poor nutrition during their infant years or when they were in the womb, according to a scientific report carried out by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

4#RECIDIVISM Three out of every eight people who were placed on probation or community services orders in 2007 had committed a further criminal offence within two years, new figures have revealed. New CSO figures also show that 60 per cent of female offenders under the age of 18 had re-offended within two years.

5#INFECTIONS One on twenty patients has acquired an infection when in hospital, according to a new report from the HSE. 5.2 per cent of 9,030 patients in 50 Irish hospitals developed an infection more than two days after they were admitted to a hospital, after a medical device was inserted or within a defined time limit after an operation.
