The Evening Fix: Saturday

Things we learned, loved and shared today.

Woah! We wouldn’t fancy getting that close to fire, but this performer taking part in limbo dancing at the clash of the Celtic Giants at Glenarm Castle knows what he is doing. The event is part of the Dalriada Festival in Larne.

THINGS WE LEARNED:

#PEACE PROCESS The Orange Order should take part in the peace process, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has said. He told reporters today that he wants a meeting with Orange Order leaders, and that dialogue needs to take place. Adams said he hoped the violence that marred this year’s 12 July marches won’t be repeated.

#CONDOMS There was an “interesting” reaction to the distribution of 1,000 free condoms on the streets of Dublin last night. SpunOut handed the condoms to people on nights out, and told us that most people were positive – though some demonstrated a worrying attitude about STIs.

#SYRIA As killings of civilians continue in Syria, the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has called for accountability. He urged the members of the UN Security Council, and particularly Russia, “who may have reservations about such a resolution to look coldly and candidly at the facts of what is now taking place in Syria”.

#DUBLIN Fianna Fáil’s Niall Collins has said that a Dublin Task Force needs to be established in order to make the streets of the capital safer. He said that a number of recent incidents, including two armed raids and a violent robbery, are “disturbing evidence of an emerging spike in violent crime in the capital”.

#MCAREAVEY A new trial over the murder of Michaela McAreavey is a possibility, Mauritius’ Director of Public Prosecutions said today. He also said that much of the forensic evidence from Michaela’s body was washed away by water, and that any interviews with suspects in the future should be filmed.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Ever thought of using grass to make art? Nope, us neither. But two ingenious artists have figured out a way to manipulate grass and create incredible copies of photographs. They have to be seen to be believed.
  • This is our second favourite pic of the day – a dog rounding up geese at the aforementioned Dalriada festival. They look fairly nonplussed. (Pic: Paul Faith/PA Wire/Press Association Images)

THINGS WE SHARED

  • This in-depth article from The Guardian has been doing the rounds even amongst non-sports fans. It gives an insight into the racism and prejudice suffered by black football players in the UK, and looks at whether things have changed in the past few decades.
  • What do film titles change to in other languages or countries? Mental Floss takes a look at how film titles change – like The Hangover, which became A Very Bad Trip, or GI Jane, which was called Satan Female Soldier in China.
  • When you go fishing, perhaps the last thing you expect to catch is a….
