IT WAS A year that brought twerking, doge, and lots of sun.

Superstitious sorts might have expected the worst from 2013, but it had a tidy amount of new things to tantalise, shock and surprise us with.

From memes to political scandals, 2013 was a year with many sides to it.

The tapes, unveiled by the Irish Independent, captured conversations between senior bankers at Anglo Irish Bank. One saw former CEO David Drumm describing the Central Bank and the Financial Regulator as "a fucking shower of clowns".

As the Dáil took a break during debating the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill, a male TD grabbed a female TD onto his lap. Lapgate caused ripples of shock around the country, raising questions about drinking and sexism in the Dáil.
