A VIDEO SHOT just before the anti-government protests began in Brazil explains the negative feelings held by many citizens about the money being poured into the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games.

Director and activist Carla Dauden says the sporting events should not be the country’s priority at a time of high illiteracy levels, gang problems and poverty.

“Now tell me, in a county where illiteracy can reach 21 per cent, that ranks 85th in the Human Development Index, where 13 million people are underfed every day and many people die waiting for medical treatment, does that country need more stadiums?” the 23-year-old asks.

In the past four days, it has been watched almost 2.4 million times.

Protests have been held across all of Brazil’s main cities. Last night, police reported that an 18-year-old man died in Sao Paulo.
