Photos: This is how Times Square looked with the lights off last night

New York City looked very different with the lights out.

LAST NIGHT WAS the seventh annual Earth Hour, which encourages people to switch off their lights for an hour in a bid to focus on energy conservation.

Landmarks around the world – including Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa – turned off their lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

Times Square in New York City was one of the places that switched off its lights for the hour, creating an eerie contrast to the usual bustle and bright lights from the many bright billboards and advertising hoardings in the area.

Press Association photographers David Goldman and Seth Wenig went into Times Square during Earth Hour and caught these rare photos of how it looked with the lights off.
