THERE WAS TRAFFIC mayhem in Dublin this evening after the Port Tunnel was closed and a bus broke down near O’Connell Street.

The tunnel was closed in both directions after a truck broke down on the northbound side and Dublin Fire Brigade was dispatched in an attempt to clear the blockage.

The tunnel was closed at about 6pm this evening with commuters reporting traffic gridlock and delays of at least an hour. The southbound side of the tunnel has now been reopened.

The closure of the tunnel meant that the HGV ban in the city was lifted in an attempt to get traffic moving on the hottest day of the year.

Adding to the disruption was the breakdown of a bus on Cavendish Row at the top of O’Connell Street.

The breakdown caused diversions in the area as vehicles were directed away from the blockage. The breakdown has now been cleared.
