Trawler detained off Kerry coast for alleged breach of fishing laws
AN IRISH-REGISTERED trawler has been detained by the Naval Service over an alleged breach of fishing rights.
The vessel was intercepted by the L.É.Niamh around 50 nautical miles (93 km) off Kerry’s Blasket Islands.
The trawler was escorted back to Castletownbere in Cork, where it arrived at about 5am this morning. It is now being handed over to gardaí, who will carry out an investigation.
This is the fifth vessel to be detained by the Naval Service so far this year.
A total of 452 vessels have been boarded by officers, and, 17 warnings have been issued.
