THE LONG-AWAITED REPORT by Senator Martin McAleese into the Magdalene Laundries was published at 4pm today on the website of the Department of Justice.

The report found evidence that the Irish State was directly and fundamentally involved in the laundries which saw more than 10,000 women kept within their walls from 1922.

Survivors have reacted with dismay to the non-apology from Enda Kenny and senior members of government. The Taoiseach this afternoon said he was sorry for the stigma that the women at the laundries had to live with and for the delay in a government report on the issue,  but stopped short of issuing a full apology on behalf of the State.

There has been a strong reaction on social media to the report. Here is just some of what people have been saying this evening.
