Two men rescued from the Sally Gap overnight

The drivers had attempted to cross the Sally Gap as snow fell.

TWO WICKLOW MOUNTAIN rescue teams were deployed overnight to provide assistance to two men who were trapped on the Sally Gap road near Roundwood.

At about 4am, the Gardaí requested help from the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain and the Glen of Imaal Irish Red Cross rescue teams after receiving an emergency call.

As snow fell in Wicklow overnight, the two young drivers had attempted to cross the Sally Gap in a small hatchback car. They became stuck near the crossroads and, fearing for their safety, contacted emergency services.

The rescue teams used specially adapted 4×4 vehicles to locate the men in what they described as “treacherous conditions”.

The pair were found at about 5am between Pier Gates and the Sally Gap crossroads. They were assessed by medical personnel and brought to safety.

The Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap roads are expected to remain covered in snow for at least another 24 hours and motorists have been advised to avoid these routes.

Although a relatively small amount of snow has fallen, the rescue teams say conditions underfoot are making driving over the passes “very difficult”.
