POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have condemned an ‘elaborate hoax’ that forced the evacuation of a number of residents, including some elderly people.

A suspicious device was found in the garden of a house in the Innisfree Gardens area of Strabane yesterday afternoon.

PSNI officers and bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene, and after examining the device declared it to be a hoax.

Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said:

“During this incident a number of residents, including some elderly people, had to be evacuated from their homes.

Incidents such as this cause distress and anxiety to those affected by it. It also causes disruption to the local community and I would condemn the actions of those responsible.

The PSNI has appealed for anyone with witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or who may have information, to contact police at Strabane.
