Ulster Bank apologises as customers unable to withdraw cash from ATMs

The bank is saying tonight that if customers have been left out of pocket as a result, the issue will be “put right”.

ULSTER BANK BANKING systems have been experiencing “technical difficulties” this evening, and there are multiple reports of customers being unable to access their cash.

The bank tweeted this message earlier this evening, and a spokesperson confirmed to TheJournal.ie that work was ongoing to fix the issue:


Customers on Twitter have been saying that both the app and online platform is down and there are multiple complaints from people not able to withdraw money or pay in-store by visa debit.

The bank have issued several more updates since the start of the problem, with one of the latest Tweets stating:

Our customers are reporting that services are coming back on line. We will confirm when all systems have returned to normal service.

The bank is advising anyone unable to resolve the problem to call into a branch in the morning or to contact them by phone.

The institution, which had a large scale systems melt-down last year, also Tweeted this message:

If customers have been left out of pocket as a result of these problems, we will put this right.

It isn’t just Ulster Bank, the technical glitches are also impacting on RBS and NatWest customers who have tweeted similar messages of apology.

Today is known as “‘Cyber Monday” and is one of the biggest days in the calendar for online shopping.

Last year’s prolonged IT failure at Ulster Bank left 750,000 customers without any banking services for multiple weeks. The ‘technical glitch’ cost the bank more than €100 million.

Ulster Bank CEO Jim Brown stated earlier this year that the root cause of the 2012 problem had been fixed, and said that the bank was “working with RBS to ensure the resilience of the systems are improving”.
