AN UNINSURED MOTORIST, driving while five times over the legal alcohol limit, has been arrested after encountering a Garda checkpoint in Co Kildare.

The driver, a man aged in his 40s, came upon the checkpoint at Sexes Road in Newbridge at midnight last night.

The gardaí on duty at the checkpoint were in the process of impounding another vehicle for having no motor tax or NCT certificate when the drunk driver approached them on the wrong side of the road.

A tweet from the Garda account suggested that the officers present “had to take evasive action to avoid being knocked down”.

The driver was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

“The gardaí were dealing with another car when this driver comes along and crosses over to the wrong side of the road,” a spokesperson told

“The man has since been arrested and charged,” they added.
