THE WRECKAGE OF a US military helicopter that went missing while delivering aid in quake-hit Nepal has been found, the Nepalese army said today.

It is unknown if there are any survivors.

“We don’t know if there are any survivors, we have yet to confirm that. We have sighted the wreckage from the air, we are now trying to land in the area and get more information,” Major General Binoj Basnet told AFP by telephone.

Six marines and two Nepalise soldiers were on board at the time.

The wreckage was located in the district of Dolakha, near the Chinese border

Basnet says ground troops are being sent to survey the wreckage on the mountainous terrain. Many areas in that region of Nepal are not reachable by air or road.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Nepal this week – just over two weeks after more than 8,000 people were killed in April’s quake.
