This ominous series of images from Met Eireann show the rain clouds lurking before it hit large parts of Ireland earlier today.

AS IF LEAVING Cert students collecting their results and the Team Ireland Olympic homecoming didn’t have enough to contend with, large parts of the country were hit by torrential rain for much of today.

Met Éireann issued a weather warning and drivers were warned to be extra cautious as heavy rain and gale force winds surged from the south of the country to cover almost every single county over the course of the day.

These images from the rainfall radar on the Met Éireann website show how the day panned out, with the rain lurking ominously over the south coast at the start of the day before attacking and covering large parts of the country. The heaviest rain is signified by the colour red, followed by bright pink, yellow, and blue.

Hope you remembered your rain gear if it’s still lashing wherever you are…
