SPOT FLOODING IS likely in some areas as bands of heavy rain sweep across the country over the next 48 hours.

There’ll be persistent rain at times in the north and west this morning.

That will be followed by a dry afternoon in many areas.

However, the wet and windy weather will return tonight – with the rain turning heavy in the southwest and west later this evening.

Large rainfalls are expected on higher ground, according to Met Éireann.

“Southerly winds will become strong and gusty as well with gale force winds in coastal areas and the chance of severe gusts in exposed parts of the west.

Temperatures will fall to 5 or 6 degrees locally early in the night, but it will become milder again with the onset of the rain.

Tomorrow, the rain will clear to showers again. However Tuesday night will be windy and wet too – with strong to gale force winds expected.

It will stay unsettled for the rest of the week.
