Rainfall warnings and high tides: the weather is going to get Biblical today

REMEMBER BACK ABOUT one week ago when we were all amazed by how balmy the weather was?

Here’s a reminder: just six days ago, Halloween was the warmest one in Ireland for almost 20 years, with temperatures reaching almost 18 degrees Celsius.

Well, things have changed. Changed terribly.

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for a huge swathe of the country today, with 17 counties expected to be hit by heavy rain.

Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo could see up to 40mm of rain between now and 6pm, while the whole of Leinster plus Waterford (sorry Waterford) are going to get lashed on from 6pm onwards as the rain moves across the country.

Dublin is bracing itself for the double whammy of heavy rainfall plus a high tide due to hit at 11pm tonight, a combination which in the past has led to major flooding.

Dublin City Council is deploying extra staff to coastal areas at Clontarf, Sandymount, Fitzwilliam Quay and Cardiff Lane as a precautionary measure, and plans to close the flood gates on the River Dodder.

Long story short: bring your raincoat if you’re leaving the house this evening.
