A WOMAN HAS appeared in court charged with the murder of a 59-year-old man in Galway city on Sunday night.

RTÉ reports that 30-year-old Maura Thornton, from Apartment 1, 183 Upper Salthill in Galway city, was charged with the murder of Kevin Joyce who died from multiple stab wounds following an incident in the apartment building shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

The 30-year-old woman was arrested at the scene following the discovery of the Joyce’s body on Sunday night. She is reported to have said “May he rest in peace,” when charged.

At Galway District Court this morning she was remanded in custody to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice on 9 August.

Separately, the eight men arrested in connection with a stabbing in Dublin which also took place on Sunday night have been released from garda custody, according to the Irish Times.

The four men and four women were detained after a man in his 30s, named locally as Kevin Kenny, died following an attack near a nightclub on the Sarsfield Road in Ballyfermot.

The investigation continues.
