Luas passengers who may have witnessed gangland killing asked to contact gardaí
Two Luas trams were passing the scene when 27-year-old Michael Kelly was gunned down at the Grand Canal last month.

GARDAÍ HAVE ISSUED a renewed appeal for information on the killing of Michael Kelly in Dublin 8 on Monday 15 July.

27-year-old Kelly – who was known to gardaí and had a number of convictions for drug offences – was shot dead at Grand Canal Place close to St James’s Hospital, at an area known locally as the ‘Dry Canal’.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. A short time later, gardaí recovered a firearm from a burnt out car in Rialto.

Two Luas trams were passing at the time of the attack (10.28am), and gardaí are this evening appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to get in touch.

Investigating officers have already received information from some of the passengers, but there are still several who haven’t come forward.

There have been five arrests so far in connection with the investigation, but no charges have been brought. Most recently, a man was arrested on Friday and held overnight for questioning.

Four people – one man and three women aged in their mid 30s to 40s – were previously arrested in relation to the attack They were released two days later without charge, and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí describe the suspected gunman as being between 5’10 and 6′ in height. He was wearing a sky blue hoodie with white shoulders.

CCTV footage from the Luas system and from local businesses in the area has also been examined as part of the investigation.
