Details on minimum pricing of alcohol to be published today
Cheap alcohol has been targeted under the new pricing rules.
THE DETAILS ON the new alcohol pricing laws will be published today.
On Tuesday, the cabinet decided to go ahead with The Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, the government’s initiative on the minimum pricing of alcohol. Under the new rules a price will be set for which alcohol cannot be sold under that price.
Abuse of alcohol
The new measures is an attempt to try and control the abuse of alcohol and has been welcome by groups such as Alcohol Action who said that the very cheapest alcohol products “are those favoured by the heaviest and most harmful drinkers among us, as well as our young people”.
However, the government stopped short of banning sports sponsorship.
Some of the new measures include, the introduction of a watershed on advertising drinks and making alcohol carry specific health warnings and calorie levels.
Supermarkets and small shops will also be required by law to confine their off-licence to a certain section of the store.
Environmental Health Officers will be tasked with enforcing the rules.
