It’s the day after the first wild night at Electric Picnic. Whether you paced yourself or hit it pretty hard, make sure to get along to TheJournal.ie’s top picks today.
1. First up. FOOD.
There are over 100 food stalls at the festival offering everything from burger and chips to thai food to pulled pork sandwiches. Whether it’s 9am or midday, no one will judge you for scoffing down a full-blown meal. You’ll need the energy.
Why not visit the Artisan Food Market this year which offers the best produce from the local area.
The Theatre of Food is also a must see. Hosting some of the top chefs in the country this feature of the festival showcases Irish talent in the food industry, allowing you to try some tasters as well as get involved in some workshops.
Our top picks for the weekend include:
- Hangover Food where Aine Maguire and John McKenna will demostrate some classic fix-me-up recipes. (We know this will be needed)
- Food for Life with David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear and Miriam Atkins.
- Beer and Beards with Colin Hession who will deconstruct a beer and allow those attending to taste the individual components before they get put together, fermented and conditioned out.
- How To Be A Session Hero with Oisín David and Paul Flynn who will demonstrate how to make large quantities of party drinks to serve for every type of gathering.
- Taco Workshop with Danette Milne – everything you wanted to know from tacos to tortillas.
- Record-making length of nettle pasta (Family Event) with Ed Hick where there will be a record-breaking attempt a make a length of nettle pasta.
2. Visit all the weird and wonderful art.
Electric Picnic isn’t just about the music. Dotted around the site, hidden in all the nooks and crannys are innovative and creative artworks. Be it umbrellas hanging from the trees or giant woven foxes playing violins, there is loads to feast your eyes over.
3. Catch up with Ireland’s well-known authors
The Literary Tent, supported by the Arts Council, pairs music with word, showcasing some of Ireland’s best loved authors such as John Banville and Anne Enright.
One of this year’s highlights is the pairing of New York-based writer and National Book Award-winning author Colum McCann (Let the Great World Spin and TransAtlantic) with singer-songwriter, Lisa Hannigan. This is on from 5pm-6pm today.
4. Maniac 2000.
Possibly the best Irish dance tune there ever was. Relive your youth with the main man himself, Mark McCabe this evening, 8.30pm, at Electric Ireland’s 90s Power Party.
Greetings, hold tight with a new jam, hold tight with the mic in the left hand. It’s me and I’m on the groove tip. Are you ready now move to the roof!
5. Fill your day with a bit of a laughter.
The Comedy Tent has some great acts this year, including Adam Hills, Des Bishop, The Rubberbandits, Deirdre O’Kane and David McSavage. The tent will be open from 1pm to 9pm today.

6. Oh he lives in a house, a very big house… you know the drill.
Cheeky chappies Blur are taking to the main stage at 11.3opm directly after Sam Smith’s set.
