CORK COUNTY COUNCIL has confirmed that it has secured €12.4 million in funding from the government which it intends to use to help build over 800 new homes.

The areas earmarked for development are Water-Rock, in Midleton, and Ballinglanna, in Glanmire.

The funds were provided by the Department of Housing as part of its Local Infrastructure and Housing Activation Fund (LIHAF). Although announced by the government in March, this update from the council shows where the units will be.

The council said that, in the first phase, it is targeting the delivery of 520 houses in Water-Rock and 300 in Ballinglanna by 2021.

It said that the project aims to deliver more affordable housing, at €20,000 below the market price in over a third of the new units.

Two further sites, at Maglin in Ballincollig and Shannonpark in Carrigaline, are currently under consideration for similar funding, the council added.

The LIHAF was announced by the government as part of its Rebuilding Ireland plan last year.

Offering over €200 million in funding, it was designed to “enable the accelerated delivery of housing on key development sites in Dublin and in urban areas of high demand for housing”.
