Watch: We did loop-the-loops and barrel rolls in this 1940s plane

We took a trip in the de Havilland Chipmunk.

TheJournal.ie / YouTube

THIS WEEK WE got to go for a spin in a de Havilland Chipmunk.

It’s a vintage two-seat aircraft that was used to train pilots in several air forces internationally after World War II.

Alan Murphy of the Irish Historic Flight Foundation was our pilot. We took off from Weston Airport in Lucan and, after a nice leisurely flight over Maynooth and Kilcock, did some spins and loop-the-loops.

Check out the footage above from the flight, with the odd bonus yelp when we found ourselves upside down.

The Chipmunk is one of several aircraft taking part in the Bray Air Display. The event, which has been extended to two days this year, is happening on 23 and 24 July.

Some 27 jets and 46 aircraft will take to the sky over the course of the weekend.

This is the 11th year of the free event. About 90,000 people made their way to the promenade in Bray for the show last year.

Organisers have asked people planning to attend to use public transport if possible. For more information visit brayairdisplay.com.

Ah. ..the Chippie. I learned to fly in one in the 70s. Very fond memories. It’s good to see there’s a good few flying still.

What a missed opportunity for some half decent video footage.. Just jerky views of the underneath of the canopy!
