1. #OSCARS It has been an incredible day for Irish film, with Room and Brooklyn scooping a number of Oscar nominations, including ones for Best Film and Best Actress. Lenny Abrahamson is up for Best Director.

2. #RIP In sad news for the film world, legendary British actor Alan Rickman has passed away. He was 69 and said to have been suffering from cancer.

3. #JAKARTA A series of suicide bombings in Jakarta are said to have followed the pattern of the Paris attacks. At least two people were killed in the blasts this morning.

4. #DÁIL Things got heated in the Dáil today when Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald criticised Labour’s childcare plan, calling it ‘insulting’. In response, Joan Burton defended the government’s record on childcare investment.

5. #DAVID BOWIE David Bowie’s body is said to have been cremated in New York. Reports say there were no friends or family present, and that he had told his loved ones that he ‘wanted to go without any fuss’.
