Debate: Do you get a new outfit for Christmas Day?

Is a new outfit essential on Christmas Day?

WHEN’S THE RIGHT time to put up the Christmas tree? Should Santa gifts ever be wrapped? Is a new outfit essential for Christmas Day? These are just a few of the topics that divide opinion over the festive season.

Each week, we’ll be diving into a new Dinner Table Debate, getting to the bottom of the most contentious Christmas questions.

For some, Christmas Day is only to be spent in the most comfortable pyjamas and slippers, while for others it’s an affair to get dressed up to the nines for.

This week we’re asking: Do you get a new outfit for Christmas Day?

To get you started, we asked some our colleagues about their Christmas Day ensemble of choice.

From mammies buying outfits to staying in pyjamas all day – Christmas clothes are a very personal choice…

New pyjamas are essential:

We don’t get a new outfits but my mum always buys everyone new pyjamas for Christmas Eve and we all wear them with great ceremony for the annual Christmas Eve movie-watching.
Christmas clothes are bought, but don’t last long:
It’s not Christmas without new Christmas clothes in my house, although they just get worn for dinner before swiftly getting back into pyjamas.
Who’s paying?
I would have always gotten a Christmas outfit up until I was about 17, but after that it was always hit and miss whether I bothered or not… probably because it was no longer on my parent’s dime.
Now, comfort is key:
Christmas clothes were a big deal in our house growing up and I would have got them up until my early twenties. But now it’s all about comfort, like Joey from Friends in Phoebe’s maternity pants on Thanksgiving.

So tell us: Do you get a new outfit for Christmas Day?
